Core 4: Camping & Hiking

Devotional – Faith

Opening

  • Today we learned some camping skills that builds trust in ourselves that we can survive in the woods.
  • Now let’s see what the bible says we should really be putting our faith and trust in, every day.
  • Read, or someone read Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

2 Corinthians 5:7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.

Devotional

Big picture For we cannot clearly see Jesus in this life, therefore we walk by faith only.

  • I trust that my tent will keep me dry. Why? I set it up, and looked it over carefully while I did. I have convinced myself that the tent is waterfast. This is faith in something seen. My faith is based on my senses.
  • Q: Do you know someone who is legally blind? How do they get around?
  • Today we learned how to hike & camp but Imagine if somehow you became blind while out on a hike.
  • Hiking blind, we would likely stumble & fall, right, maybe even get hurt, without a rescuer to guide us?
  • But the Blind Hiker must trust the rescuer, or he cannot be saved, right? He cannot save himself without trust in someone to save him.
  • But what about us? We can see—our eyes work! But 2COR says we cannot trust what we see in this life, our eyes are no good for spiritual matters.
  • Don’t trust your physical eyesight, trust in the Lord instead.
  • Here, we are speaking up faith in the unseen. We cannot use our senses to follow Jesus, only our faith in Him.
  • Trust in the Lord with all your heart and He will lead your paths straight!
  • So spiritually speaking, we ARE blind, just like the blind hiker example.
  • So, who will rescue us?! We are blind & stuck- spiritually!
  • Jesus is our rescuer! And, He can be completely trusted for He loves us beyond any love we could imagine.
  • So when we talk about Faith, faith means complete trust in a loving Jesus, who is our Lord and Savior.
  • We cannot see Jesus in this life until He returns forever (The 2nd coming), but until He returns, we can hear Him speak to us through the Holy Spirit.
  • So, remember: As you walk along your faith journey, listen closely to your unseen rescuer (Jesus), trusting Him only, for He is our Savior. Do not trust your eyes. Trust what the Lord says

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Topical Questions

  1. How is walking by faith like hiking blind? How is it different?

  2. What does “walking by faith, not by sight” mean?

  3. What does it mean to walk with Jesus?

  4. Give an example of a time you did something on faith? How is that similar or different than the faith Jesus demands?

Closing Prayer
