Service Chair

The Service Chair is a member of the Troop Committee responsible for the troop’s service projects and initiatives. As a troop, we believe that we are called to serve others, and that part of this is engaging in purposeful service throughout the year. Our middle and high school boys have specific service expectations for advancement, and our elementary boys are encouraged to join in service projects.

A troop such as ours has many activities and initiatives going on any given point in time. The Service Chair fulfills a critical role in keeping service prominent in our planning. The ideal candidate has a deep personal commitment to service, combined with a creative resourcefulness needed for promote opportunity in a troop of more than 100 boys.

Qualifications

Core Duties

  • Maintain relationships with church department and external organizations that would benefit from our service initiatives.
  • Advocate for opportunities to include service within our annual troop plan.
  • Provide advice on youth initiative service projects (e.g. Timberline and Freedom), either directly to youth or in coordination with the Trail Guide.
  • Supervise calendaring, RSVPing, and administrative paperwork process for service-focused events.
  • Provide leadership to the service team.

Additional Responsibilities

  • As a member of the troop leadership, pay active attention to troop business and be able to accurately and thoughtfully represent the troop to others in the church and community.
  • Complete Peak 1 and Peak 2 trainings during first year of service.

Timing of Duties

  • There are not weekly duties at the troop meetings for the Service Chair. However, the Service Chair should be available for Monday meetings when needed based on the topic(s) of the meeting.

  • Most duties of the Service Chair are completed outside of the meeting time.

  • The Service Chair is encouraged to attend campouts and activities to inform a practical understanding of the ministry's operations. The Service Chair would often be present at major troop service projects.
