Devotional – Perseverance
Opening
- We learned today about being a good sport, now let’s see what the bible says about being a good sport.
- Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down
Hebrews 12:1-2 “And let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus...”
Devotional
Big picture As in sports, as in life, working together as a team is important.
- Q: Have you ever gone to see a college or professional sports team play? (or tell about one you have)
- Q: What would have happened if only one player had showed up to play?
- That team would surely lose or maybe even have to forfeit the game.
- Jesus Christ had a team. Who was his team? That’s right, the 12 Disciples (and other disciples)
- Jesus didn’t work alone. We shouldn’t either. Teamwork is important.
- Today when we played, wasn’t it important to work together as a team?
- You would not have played very well without the rest of your team.
- It is important in life to have people near us, on our “team” to help us through life.
- Q: Can you name some people close to you who are part of your team every day?
- family, teachers, etc
- These people help you through life, so they are part of your team.
- We are also part of Jesus’ team if we follow Him. He chose everyone of you, just like His disciples.
- It sure is fun to be part of a team. Sharing fun and even hard times can be one of the best things in life.
- Around here, everyone lives in large communities: Raleigh, Cary, our church, our state, etc.
- A sports team is like a small community.
- As young boys you learn to live in community when you play team sports.
- You learn how to share, how to get along with others, and how to do things to help each other.
- That’s the same thing that adults have to do in real life communities across the world.
- Q: Can you think of any other small community/teams you may be a part of? (Trail life, school, family)
- One day, when you grow up, what you learned in your teams will be important. So things go well.
- Playing team sports teaches you so much. Even Jesus was on a team. We hope you play well with others and work hard at learning to play whatever it is you choose to play (sports, chess, maker-games)
- The memory verse talks about a team of 3 people. Can you guess who they are? (Trinity)
Memory Verse #1:
Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Topical Questions
-
The memory verse can be boiled down to 3 things: God gave + we believe = we receive (eternal life). Does that help to remember the verse?
-
In the teaching verse it says to have perseverance. What does perseverance mean?
-
How do we “throw off everything that hinders” us?
by focusing on Jesus instead of the bad stuff
Closing Prayer
Dear Jesus, we thank You for saving us and not condemning us. For we all have sinned and fallen short of Your standard for righteousness. You made us right in God’s eyes. And Father God, we thank You for loving us so much that You sent Your Son, Jesus to die for our sins. Oh, what amazing grace! Oh, what love! We thank You and we love You! We pray this in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen
