Trail Guide (Adventurer)

Adventurer Trail Guides are the primary adult facilitators of the Adventurer level. The Adventurers are primarily youth-led, but the Advisor and the Trail Guides provide guidance, support, and supervision.

Most Adventurer Trail Guides are experienced outdoorsmen, intuitively capable of advising on the skills needed for the program and its activities. At the same time, all Adventurer Trail Guides must be Godly role models and mentors for the Adventurer Trailmen, who are in critical years for the development of their character as men.

Adventurer Trail Guides have the opportunity, but not the responsibility, to serve as the adult event lead for camping trips, service projects, and other outings of the Navigator/Adventurer group.

Qualifications

Core Duties

  • Work collaboratively with the Adventurer Advisor to provide supervision and guidance at weekly meetings.
  • Advise youth on completion of badge work and other program advancement items.
  • Ensure a safely supervised patrol meeting, including complying with all policies of TLUSA and The Shepherd's Church as it relates to youth.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Inform Advisor and Troopmaster if unable to attend a regular meeting
  • Pay active attention to troop calendar and announcements to enable thoughtful communication with patrol members and parents
  • Complete Peak 1 and Peak 2 trainings during first year of service.

Timing of Duties

  • Many Trail Guides are involved in every weekly meeting, although some alternate or otherwise schedule their participation.
  • Outside of meetings, Trail Guides assisting on a particular topic or activity would need to take time to prepare and review materials. Adventurer Trail Guides do not typically have out-of-meeting administrative duties, unless specifically delegated by the Advisor or Troopmaster.
  • Adventurer Trail Guides frequently attend Navigator/Adventurer campout, although supervision of these events does not require the entire team of Trail Guides to be present.
