Health and Safety Chair
The Health and Safety Chair is a member of the Troop Committee responsible for administering the health and safety protocols in place within the troop. Our troop has expectations imposed by Trail Life USA for the management of youth and adult health and medical information. Ensuring the troop meets these expectations is the first priority duty of the Health and Safety Chair.
As the Health and Safety Chair gains knowledge about best practices under Trail Life Health and Safety Guidelines, the Health and Safety Chair becomes an important resource to event leadership and the committee in general during planning.
This position may also be appointed as Health and Safety Administrator, if the candidate is not fulfilling the committee-level functions. Duties remaining applicable are starred below.
Qualifications
- Christian age 21 or older
- Registered Adult (or eligible to be registered)
- Agree to the Shepherd's Church Volunteer Covenant and qualified for service
Core Duties
- Process health and safety documentation from troop membership, including reviewing for ambiguous information, seeking clarification, and ensuring orderly filing. *
- Prepare event leadership by highlight relevant safety policies as well as preparing a trip folio of relevant health forms and records. *
- Review newly published health and safety policies and advise the troop leadership on implementation.
- Assist event leadership with risk assessment exercises.
- Assist Training Chair with maintenance of records of First Aid certifications.
- Manage incident reporting within the troop: reports should be timely filed and troop leadership always aware of the status of an incident.
Additional Responsibilities
- As a member of the troop leadership, pay active attention to troop business and be able to accurately and thoughtfully represent the troop to others in the church and community.
- Complete Peak 1 and Peak 2 trainings during first year of service.
Timing of Duties

While the Health and Safety Chair does not have duties within the weekly meetings, the Health and Safety Chair should either be available to receive health forms or make arrangements as to who is receiving the forms in his place.

The Health and Safety Chair may need to occasionally review documents outside of meeting times or engage in the troop planning process. Preparation of activity/trip folios is a time-sensitive task that will need to be completed in advance of a particular trip.

The Health and Safety Chair is welcome to attend campouts and activities to inform a practical understanding of the ministry's operations. It is not the expectation that the Health and Safety Chair normally serve in the event Health and Safety lead role (the individual managing first aid and H&S compliance during an event).
