Elective 10: Gardening

Devotional – Gardening

Opening

  • Gardening is sowing seeds and reaping a harvest, let’s see what God says about sowing and reaping.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

2 Corinthians 9:10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

Devotional

Big picture By God’s design, gardens can provide food for us.

  • Q: Does anyone have a garden at home or at school they help tend? (if so, have them talk about what they grow and what they like about gardening, if not, talk about a garden you may have or had)
  • Q: Do you know that God and Jesus talk a lot about gardens and gardening in the Bible? (Garden of Eden, the parable of the sower, parable of the mustard seed, Jesus vine: we are branches)
  • By God’s design, gardens can provide food for us.
  • Notice we said CAN provide food, not WILL provide us food because gardening takes effort.
  • If you don’t carefully tend your garden, it will not provide you food.
  • But the main point is God’s plan is that we take care of ourselves and our family by growing gardens.
  • Growing a garden is a very godly thing to do:
    • We can feed ourselves.
    • Fresh vegetables and fruit are good for our bodies.
    • We can help feed others with surplus harvest.
    • It makes us exercise and gets us outdoors
    • It is very relaxing and clears our mind from cares and worry.
    • It puts us in touch with the earth, God’s creation.
    • It allows us to be self-sufficient, to not be a burden to others.
    • It teaches us patience and discipline.
    • It is an example of God’s provision for our lives.
    • A well-tended garden is very pleasing to look at.
  • Gardens are miracles really. It is amazing to watch plants grow, with just a little effort on our part.
  • We should thank God for creating such a wonderful, bountiful earth that allows us to grow food.
  • And, we should thank God for allowing us to live in the U.S.A. which grows more food than anywhere.
  • Now let’s go to our new memory verse about God giving, our believing, our having, and Jesus saving.

Memory Verse #1:

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Topical Questions

  1. In the teaching verse, who is the He who supplies and multiplies our gardening efforts?
    God

  2. The teaching verse is actually about being generous with our giving. Can you see that meaning?

  3. Isn’t it amazing that something so simple as growing a garden can be so wonderful and good?

Closing Prayer

Father God, we thank You for loving us so much that You sent Your one and only son, Jesus, to die to save the world from our sins. Help us to remember Your love, and Jesus’ love as we grow our gardens. Help us to be generous sowers of the Gospel. Father, increase our harvest. In your name, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!
