Elective 7: Improvised Tools

Devotional – God’s Tools

Opening

  • It was fun learning how to make tools, now let’s learn about the tool God uses to do His work!
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Jeremiah 23:29 Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock into pieces?

Devotional

Big picture The word of God is a powerful tool!

  • Q: What is your favorite tool? (e.g. hammer, pliers, saw).
  • Q: But, did you know that the written word is also a tool? In fact, it is one of the most powerful tools.
  • Q: Have any of you read a schoolbook or website article that taught you how to do something new?
  • What you read made you smarter and more powerful (capable) than you were before reading it.
  • So, the words you read were a tool because they helped you, like a shovel is a tool to help you dig.
  • We think of tools as only being shovels or hammers, but books are tools, too, and so is fire.
  • Q: How can fire be a tool? (cooking, heating, warmth, cleansing the forest of dead wood)
  • Tools are very valuable in life. They make us able to do certain tasks.
  • The Bible is a very valuable tool in a Christian’s life.
    • It teaches us about God and what the Kingdom of Heaven is like.
    • It gives us direction in life.
    • It shows us how to treat others.
    • It teaches us history.
    • It shows us how to save ourselves and other people from hell.
    • It tells us wrong from right. And so much more!!!!!
  • The Bible is the word of God, and so it is an amazingly powerful tool! It’s even more amazing in a sad way that so few people actually read it. Just think how much better the world would be.
  • When we do what God says in the Bible, it makes us able to do the tasks we are supposed to do.
  • In the teaching verse, the Lord, speaks through the prophet Jeremiah to tell us that His word (the Bible) is a powerful tool like a fire. Think of how big & powerful a raging fire is. And yet, you can hold a Bible in your hand. And that verse says the Bible is like a sledgehammer that breaks rocks. Think about that. I hope you never look at your Bible the same way again without thinking about how powerful it is.

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

Topical Questions

  1. How is the word of God (the Bible) like a fire?
it causes your heart to burn, it cleanses the dead wood
  2. How is the word of God like a sledgehammer capable of pulverizing the hardest rock? (heart of stone)
  3. If tools are meant to help people, doesn’t it make sense that the Bible is the best tool ever?

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You that You gave us the Bible. It is such a powerful tool, yet we can hold it in the palm of our hand. Help us to read Your word every day to gain a heart of wisdom. And, help us to obey what is written in the Bible. Because it is powerful only if we do what is says. You are such a loving Father. You make the best tools! In Your Son Jesus Christ’s name, we pray this prayer. Amen!
