Devotional – Astronomy
Opening
- It was fun learning about the science of Astronomy, now let’s see what God says about Astronomy.
- Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down
Genesis 1:16 God made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.
Devotional
Big picture God created the universe and is all-powerful (omnipotent).
- Q: What would you do if you had the power to do anything?
- Q: How powerful is God? Is there anything He cannot do? NO!
- God has the power to do anything. He is all-powerful!
- The bible uses the word OMNIPOTENT to describe God’s all-powerful nature. (Have the kids say the word “Omnipotent” a couple times to get used to saying it)
- There is nothing God cannot do. He is Omnipotent. All powerful.
- Q: So, what did God do with all His power? (Hint: It tells us in Genesis what He did)
- He made the universe, all the galaxies, the stars, our galaxy, the sun, the moon, the planets, and earth.
- Remember last week we discussed that God made the weather. He makes the earth run smoothly with just the right amounts of rain, sun, wind, cold, snow, and ice.
- And remember last week we also discussed that God is not far away. He is very near and watching over everything.
- By the science of astronomy, we can understand a little bit about God’s universe and the stars. Because God is not a God of confusion. He made an organized universe we can know and understand a little.
- God wants us to know about Him through science, but we are so small compared to God we cannot know and understand much compared to God. Astronomy shows us how amazing God’s creation is.
- But we are not God, so we will never understand how the universe works, nor see all the infinite size of the universe. But, God can. He holds all the universe together in His mighty hands.
- Q: Have you ever looked up at the stars on a clear, dark night and seen the millions of stars in the sky?
- There is more than you can count. God made each star unique. Think about that. God made each one.
- If you could travel as fast as you wanted into the heavens, you would never reach the end of the universe. It is so big it is beyond our understanding how big it is. God created all of it, He is powerful!

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.
Topical Questions
- Think of the biggest number you know. Now multiply that number by itself. What number do you have?
The universe is bigger. - Can we know all about how the universe works?
We know a little, but we will never understand it all. It is too big. - Have you ever looked up at the sky and thought you were insignificant?
God doesn’t think that. Think of our significance to bear His image in this grand universe.
Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, when we look up into the sky and see the sun, moon and stars, help us to be thankful for Your creation. We stand in awe of Your omnipotent power that You created all this. For You hold the infinite universe in the palm of Your hands. There is nothing You cannot do. Thank you for sending Your son, Jesus to die for our sins. In Your Son Jesus Christ’s name, we give You praise. Amen!
