Core 1: Know Your Environment

Devotional – Creation

Opening

  • Today we learned a lot about God’s creation, now let’s see what the Bible says about created things.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Genesis 1:24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.

Devotional

Big picture Creatures each have their kinds which shows that God desires order not chaos.

  • Q: Have any of you seen a building being constructed or a road being constructed? It’s fun to watch.
  • Q: Do you think the construction just happens without any planning or organization?
  • No, we know that someone has planned all the construction beforehand. The construction workers are following those plans in what they build.
  • And, we know construction is done in a very organized way. They don’t put the roof on first.
  • God, too, likes things organized, and He had a plan. He created everything in its proper order.
  • God intentionally created order.
  • The world is not full of chaos, it is neat and orderly, it is organized, it has a plan, just like our construction example.
  • The Bible verse says God made the animals according to their kinds.
  • He made fish for water, not for the desert. He made the zebra and his stripes for the desert.
  • He made the giraffe for the tall trees. He made the polar bear for the snow and ice. (ask the kids for other examples they can come up with along these same lines of God's orderly creation.)
  • God made all creatures, great & small, with a plan, according to their kinds. And there are many, many kinds of creatures. So many, we are still finding new kinds today.
  • But they all have one thing in common: they were all created by God, that’s why we call them creatures.
  • And their design is distinct and purposeful. We don’t have fish swimming in the desert, just like we don’t have bears living at the bottom of the sea, nor elephants with wings.
  • We don’t have fish-bears and we don’t have butterfly-elephants.
  • (Let the kids imagine other make-believe creatures, NOT according to their kinds, like “fish-bears”)
  • That was fun creating make-believe creatures. But it served a purpose to remind us that God did not make imaginary creatures. His creatures are all created orderly according to their kinds.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

Topical Questions

  1. Did God create Adam and Eve before He created animals or after them? Why?

  2. Did God create plants before animals or after them? Why?

  3. God made the world orderly because He knows what is best for us. Is it good to have chaos?
If creatures kept changing kinds, it would be chaos. It would not be peaceful and orderly.

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, we give You thanks for creating all creatures great and small according to their kinds. We may not understand everything about Your creation, but we trust You that You know what is best for us. You created man in Your imagine unlike any other creature. You set us apart from all creation to rule over it. Help us to be good stewards of Your creation by knowing our environment wherever we may choose to live! In Your son Jesus' name, we pray. Amen!
