Core 3: Map Skills

Devotional – Direction

Opening

  • Today, we learned how to use a map, the Bible is like a map for life, let's see how.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Devotional

Big picture We must rely on God for direction

  • Q: Have you ever gotten lost before, like in a store or in the woods? We hope not, but it happens.
  • Q: How did being lost make you feel (or would feel)? Afraid? Worried? Sad? Upset? Hopeless?
  • Q: Have you ever heard Christian’s talk about being lost and then found? Like in the song, “Amazing Grace.” (I once was lost, but now I am found, was blind but now I see).
  • Being lost, then found is talking about our Christian faith. When they did not know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they were lost, spiritually. They had no direction in life because they didn’t have Jesus and the Bible to give them spiritual guidance, so they felt totally lost.
  • And being spiritually lost creates the same kind of feelings being physically lost does: Fear, Worry, Sadness, Anger, Hopelessness, and more. Can you imagine living that way, being lost, every day?!
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us people who are spiritually lost are all alone. They must find their own direction in life, because they don’t know the Lord. They must use their own understanding, their own wisdom and decision-making. Most lost people use their feelings to guide them. Yikes!
  • But the good news is Proverbs 3:5-6 also reminds us the Lord cares for His people. He never leaves us or forgets us. He will give us direction in life. We are never alone.
  • But we must do our part for the Lord to show us His direction; we have some responsibilities.
  • Q: Does anyone know what 3 things in Proverbs 3:5-6 says we must do to receive God’s direction?
    • Trust in the Lord, with all your heart = have faith in Him. You must build your faith daily, through studying the Bible and praying to Him to learn how to trust in Him.
    • Lean not on your own understanding = look for His guidance first, don’t rush to judgement using your own wits and wisdom. That’s what lost people do. Instead, patiently wait on His guidance.
    • Submit yourself to Him = obey Him. If your history with God is hearing from Him but then not doing what He says, why do you think He will give you His direction?

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

Topical Questions

  1. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a promise from God. Do you see the promise?
You do your part; He will do His part.

  2. Psalm 27:1 says Jesus is a light to guide us. With Jesus and the bible giving us direction, why fear?

  3. Do you know anyone that is spiritually lost and needs to hear from you about your faith in Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, we thank You for loving us so much that You will never leave us nor forsake us. We feel such comfort knowing we have found in You all we will ever need in life. We trust You God to help us through any of life’s problems. You never change. We can always trust in You. Thank You for giving us the Bible that helps us to see where we are going and where we are in life. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
