Core 6: Fire Safety

Devotional – God’s Power

Opening

  • Today we learned a lot about fire and fire safety. Now, let's see what the Bible says about how God uses fire.
  • Read, or someone read Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Exodus 3:2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him (Moses) in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.

Devotional

Big picture God is all powerful (omnipotent).

  • Q: Have any of you seen a house on fire or a forest fire? (maybe on TV or a movie) Fire is a pretty scary and powerful thing, isn't it?!
Tell a big fire story you may have, or another leader may have
  • We hope you never see a damaging fire out of control or worse have it happen to you or your family. Fire can destroy complete buildings at a time and is incredibly hot.
  • As powerful as fire is, though, God is so much more powerful. In fact, God is all powerful.
  • The term to say that God is all powerful is omnipotent.
  • Can you say it with me....OMNIPOTENT! Say it again....OMNIPOTENT!
  • Q: When you hear someone say God is omnipotent, that means God is what? All Powerful!
Put up both arms like a strong man to give kids a visual aid while saying omnipotent, have them do this action too
  • Q: So, if fire is so powerful and dangerous, why does God use fire in the Bible?
  • God uses fire because He is in control of everything, even fire. God controls even fire because He is what? Omnipotent, right! God is all powerful and controls everything that happens in the Universe.
  • God also uses fire as a cleaning tool because fire burns up dead stuff while healthy things remain.
  • God made everything. He can control everything. But, we cannot. We are just ordinary humans. So, we have to be very careful with fire not to harm anyone or cause a damaging forest fire or house fire.
  • In the teaching verse, the burning bush did not burn up. God was in control of even that aspect of fire.
  • In the teaching verse, God used fire to get Moses’ attention, like a big torch. Did it work?
  • The Bible mentions fire a lot. Do you know any other Bible stories with fire in it (Eden, Exodus, Sodom)
  • Q: What place is filled with never-ending fire? Hell. Maybe that is why fire scares us so much.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

Topical Questions

  1. Fire is not always bad and can be used for good? Can anyone give any examples of good uses of fire?
  2. How did the Israelites use fire in their sacrifices to God?
  3. Lightning causes many fires. Fire is part of God’s plan for cleansing the earth of dead things. Have any of you seen a fire started by lightning?
  4. Hebrews 12:29 says, "God is a consuming fire." Does that scare you? The Bible says to fear God.

Closing Prayer

Dear Father God, we thank you for giving us fire, for it has many useful purposes. You are a good father and want us to be safe around fire because we are not in control of everything like You are. You, God, are all powerful. You are omnipotent! You made fire for us to use for good. But we are not like You. We must be careful. Help us to remember that fire can be dangerous, but also to remember You and thank You as we sit around a warm fire with friends and family. In Christ's name we pray, Amen!
