Elective 5: My Community

Devotional – Leadership

Opening

  • Today we learned what makes a community, now let’s see what the Bible says about community leaders.
  • (Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down)

2 Cor 1:12 We have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace.

Devotional

Big picture Godly Leadership

  • Every community needs leaders to organize and lead them, or else there is chaos and confusion.
  • People look to leaders for direction. For example, what would happen in this meeting if there were no leaders running it. No one would know what to do. The meeting would be a waste of time.
  • Q: Anyone can be a leader, but what makes a good leader? Are you a good leader?
  • A good leader needs godly wisdom. Godly wisdom = God’s wisdom.
  • Q: And where can leaders go to get God’s wisdom? (Parents, Bible, prayer, other believers, pastors)
  • The teaching verse from the Apostle Paul tells us what God thinks is a good leader.
  • A good leader will desire and seek after godly wisdom to help lead people.
  • What our cities, counties, state and national leaders need is godly wisdom to make good choices for the people. They should humble themselves before God and ask for His wisdom to help them lead others.
  • The Bible is full of good and bad leaders. The good leaders were humble and prayed to God for wisdom and listened to godly counsel from others, while the bad ones were wise in their own eyes. They made decisions totally on what they thought was right and did not seek after God’s counsel.
  • Today, it is still important to seek God’s wisdom in all things.
  • Good leaders know that it is important to read God’s Word daily, and to seek to understand God’s wisdom found there.
  • Our best President’s all were godly leaders. They knew the importance of their relationship to God.
  • We can be leaders too! God places us in our own communities at a particular time so that we might be the light of the world and salt of the earth to show God’s love to other people.
  • Being “salt & light” in your community is being a leader for God. We hope each of you chooses to be a leader by showing your community what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

Memory Verse #2

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Matthew 22: 37-39 Love the Lord God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Topical Questions

  1. What does the Bible mean when it says Christians should be “salt & light” to the world?
Like salt enhances and preserves food, Christians are to make the world better and offer salvation to it.
Like light lifts the spirit, Christians are to bring hope to the hopeless and holiness to the unholy.

  2. What are some examples of good and bad leaders from the Bible?

  3. When did those good leaders seek God’s wisdom?

Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, we thank You for all Your many blessings for us! Help us to be “Salt & light” to a world that desperately needs the Gospel. Help us to seek You daily by reading the Bible and prayer. We ask for focus on seeking God’s wisdom every day. As the teaching verse says, we rely on your wisdom God, not our own. And as the memory verse says, we take refuge in you God. In Jesus Christ’s name we pray. Amen!
