Core 4: My Family

Devotional – Families

Opening

  • Today we learned families are important and we should be thankful for our family who loves us!
  • Now, let’s see what the bible says to us about families!
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Genesis 1:28 God blessed them (mankind) and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Devotional

Big picture God designed “the family” from the very creation of the world, but He’s also placed us in his own adopted family the Body of Christ. We are adopted as sons into God’s family to be light to the world.

  • Q: Who of you has the most brothers? Who has the most sisters? Does anyone have no brothers or sisters?
  • No matter what your family looks like or how many members of your family, we know one thing, God created them all! God created every family.
  • Genesis 1:28 tells us God designed “the family” as part of the very creation of the world. Think about that!
  • Q: Does anyone know where the book of Genesis is found in the bible? A: That’s right the first book.
  • God made you. He put you in your family. And He gave you a purpose.
  • Q: Do you know what that purpose is? A: To be part of the body of Christ and be the light of the world!
  • Your family is a blessing to you, but its main purpose is to empower you to do God’s work.
  • It wasn’t an accident you were put in your family. God had a purpose. Strong families create strong disciples:
    • Our family loves us and cares for us. So, we can love and care for others.
    • We have such fun with our family. So, we learn to have fun with others.
    • Our family teaches us. So, we can teach others.
    • Our family is part of the body of Christ, which means we are part of God’s larger family.
    • We are all part of one body, with many parts. Each part is very important to the entire body.
    • God loves everyone, He made us. But not everyone is in God’s family, yet. We need to invite others into God’s family.
  • Q: Have you ever thought what it would be like to NOT have a family? Many people in the world have no family. So, count your blessings for your family!

Memory Verse #2

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Matthew 22: 37-39 Love the Lord God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Topical Questions

  1. Do any of you have any fun family traditions? (e.g Holiday traditions, sports, music, camping, etc)

  2. Why do you think God designed “the family”?

  3. As a Christ follower, you are part of the Body of Christ. Why does the bible call us “Christ’s body?”

Closing Prayer

Holy Lord Jesus, we thank you most of all that you live in our hearts and that you made us a part of one spiritual body. We pray that you will rule in our hearts and that we will share together in your love and peace for us. Bless our loved ones and help us to remember the many good things you have given us.
