Devotional – Listening
Opening
- Today, we learned about Obedience, now let’s see what the bible says about that godly value.
- Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down
Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to you.
Devotional
Big picture Listen and Learn God’s Words. Memorize His sayings. Keep them in your heart. They are health and life.
- Q: Who here is a good listener? Tell us why you think you are a good listener? (if no one/give example)
- Q: Can you obey someone if you didn’t hear what they told you to obey? (No, not really)
- Q: Who is the son, God is speaking to in Proverbs 4:20, the teaching verse? (Not Jesus, but all of us).
- God calls each one of you boys His son, if you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. So, back to the verse. God, Our Heavenly Father, is commanding each of us sons to listen to His words.
- There are 4 parts to this verse. Q: Does anyone remember the first part? It says we must listen, and not just listen but we must pay close attention, or you might miss what God is saying to you.
- Q: After listening, what did God say the second thing we need do is? (Memorize His sayings)
- We must listen and learn God’s words by memorizing scripture.
- Q: Has anyone memorized 3 verses? Stand up if yes. Continue standing if 4? 5? 6? (until last standing)
- Well done (last boy standing)! That is exactly what God is commanding each of us to do, to memorize His words. Memorize verses that mean something to you. Repeat them to yourself in times of trouble.
- So, memorizing Bible verses is the second part of this verse, the third is like it, keep them in your heart!
- Q: How do you keep memorized verses in your heart? By thinking about them day and night. Basically, it means to make memorized verses a daily part of your life. Think about them often.
- The fourth and last part of the verse is a promise from God to you His sons. A really nice promise!
- The promise is: IF you LISTEN to His words, MEMORIZE them, and KEEP THEM in your heart, then you those words will bring you HEALTH and LIFE! Keeping those verses in your heart are like pieces of God stored up inside you. They have power!
- Amazing! Storing up God’s words inside you is storing up incredibly powerful things that have the power to make you healthy and a good life. So, live obediently to this verse. You’ll be glad you did!

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Closing Prayer
Dear Father God, we thank You for the opportunity to be your son simply by believing in Your eternal son Jesus. What an amazing gift. And, thank you for speaking to us through Your word the Bible. Help us to pay attention to those in authority over us and to listen to them, but especially help us to listen to You, Lord. Open our heart, mind and ears to what You have to say to us. Help us to memorize Your words, O Lord, and to keep them in our heart. Make the years of our life many! In Jesus' name we pray. Amen!
