Core 5: Teamwork

Devotional - Teamwork

Opening

  • We learned today the importance of teamwork, now let’s see what the Bible says about it.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

1 Corinthians 12:12-18 “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”

Devotional

Big picture: The body of Christ is all believers, but we each have special talents and purposes.

  • Q: Who is your favorite sports TEAM? And who is your favorite PLAYER?
  • God’s favorite team is the Body of Christ, but he doesn’t play favorites. Each of us is important to Him.
  • All believers makeup the Body of Christ and each of us has a special role to play for God.
  • But we should not think of ourselves as better or others weaker because of talents God has given us.
  • It takes all of us using our spiritual gifts, in teamwork & cooperation to do God’s work WELL.
  • It’s not just about getting more work done as a team. It is more about HOW we go about our work that matters. How we work shows we belong to God and love Him and love all people.
  • To illustrate: The teaching verse compares us church members in the Body of Christ, to human body parts.
    • Funny Q1: What body part do you think you may be? A foot? A head? A hand? An eye?
    • Funny Q2 (pick a child): So, Mr. Head, can you tell Mr. Eye, “I don’t need you anymore?” NO!
  • Just like a human body needs all its parts to work well, even more so, the Body of Christ needs each us!
  • We are to respect our team workers regardless if they are believers or not, but especially believers.
  • In Woodlands’ Foxes and Hawks, we learned teamwork gets the job done easier and better, but now you are learning that it matters even more to God HOW you go about being a good team player.
  • Jesus calls that being SALT & LIGHT to the world. And we do that by being respectful of every person, regardless of their talents, their looks, where they come from, or how powerful they are.
  • The teaching verse also says we should not get down on ourselves or compare ourselves to others.
  • Each of us has God-given gifts. Yes, the world glorifies some talents. But we are not like the world.
  • In the Body of Christ, there are many of us believers, but each of us is important!

Memory Verse #8

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home. Note: we are moving to verse #8.

Matthew 22:37-39: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Topical Questions

  1. Do you know what your spiritual gifting is?
If not, that is ok. God will show each of you in His time.

  2. What is common to teamwork, the Body of Christ, and parts of your human body?
    Unity: acting as one.

  3. Has learning more about the importance of teamwork changed how you think? If so, how?

  4. When we go camping you must all work as a team, are you ready to do your part?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus so we could be part of YOUR “team” again. Jesus is the perfect teammate who sacrificed everything for us. So, help us to be thankful and cheerful as we work alongside others. Help us to recognize and discern our spiritual gifts and to not envy our neighbor’s talents and gifting. Give us wisdom and a spirit of cooperation. In Your name, Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen!
