Elective 7: Courage

Devotional – Fear Not

Opening

  • Today, we learned about courage, now let’s see what the Bible says about courageousness.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Devotional

Big picture Fear not, God is with you!

  • Q: What things are you afraid of? (Share some things with the boys you may be afraid of).
  • People fear many things. Being hurt or someone else being hurt is probably the biggest fear, but there are many other fears too, like the fear of pain and suffering, the fear of losing control or losing someone you love, the fear of death, or even the fear of being laughed at or made fun of. There are so many things in life that we could be afraid of, it’s amazing anyone ventures out of their house.
  • But that’s being silly isn’t it? Every day we get up and go about our life without fear. Why?
  • Because we trust that we are going to be ok, even if bad things happen to us, we trust that everything will be ok. Because, if all we did was be afraid of what could happen, we probably would just stay in bed every day so as not to get hurt.
  • But bad things do happen. We see it on TV, we hear about bad things every day. But God says we should not fear for He is with us…ALWAYS. He may not take away all the bad things in life, but having the God who created the universe, the sun, the moon and the earth, walking beside you is pretty amazing, if you stop and think about it.
  • When we dwell on the things we fear, we take our eyes off God and put them only on bad things. Then, we become terrified. But in the teaching verse, God says He will never leave you nor forsake you. Forsake means that He never stops thinking about us, He always has our best in mind. His thoughts never stray from us. God is not like us. He is omnipresent. That means God is everywhere. He is always with you.
  • God doesn’t make everything perfect. We live in a fallen world dominated by Satan until Jesus returns. But that doesn’t mean that God is not right there with you. All you need to do is pray to Him and He is right there. He wants you to call on Him. He wants you to know Him, for He loves you, more than you will ever know.

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Topical Questions

  1. What is your definition of courage?

  2. What is the most courageous thing you have ever seen?

  3. Who is your hero? Are heroes courageous?

  4. Do you ever feel like God is right there with you? When?

Closing Prayer

Dear Father God, we thank You that You never leave us nor forsake us. You love us more than we will ever know. That is why You want us to have a close relationship with You. God, we know there are many things in this life that we could fear. But we trust You, God, that You will help us always. Help us to seek You whenever we are afraid. Help us to be strong and courageous. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
