Core 1: General Hobbies

Devotional – Enjoyment

Opening

  • We learned today hobbies can be fun, now let’s see what the bible says about finding enjoyment in life.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Ecclesiastes 2:24 There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink, and to find enjoyment in his work. I also perceived that this ability to find enjoyment comes from God.

Devotional

Big picture God wants us to find enjoyment in life.

  • Q: Did you know God wants you to have fun? It’s true, God created fun, just like He created all things.
  • Q: Speaking of fun, does anyone have a favorite memory they would like to share? (or share yours)
  • God lives in heaven, and the Bible tells us that heaven is filled with enjoyable times. Heaven has no bad things in it. So, fun must be a good thing to God since He lives in such a fun place as heaven.
  • Q: Isn’t that comforting to know when we die and go to heaven, every day, forever will be enjoyable!
  • The bible also tells us that hell is completely opposite of heaven. Hell has NO enjoyment. Hell is not just kind of a bad place, it is a REALLY, REALLY bad place! And those poor souls in hell are stuck there forever. Yikes! Makes you want to make sure everyone doesn’t go there doesn’t it?
  • But now, while we are here on earth, God wants us to have fun, and find enjoyable things to do.
  • The Teaching verse tells us God wants us to find enjoyment in life. Think about it. God is commanding you to find fun things to do! And, hobbies are one of the most enjoyable things to do.
  • And there are so many hobbies. We learned about a few hobbies today, but there are many more. I am certain if you don’t have a hobby already you could find one. Or ask your parents for help finding one.
  • Once people find a hobby they like, they usually do that hobby their entire life. It sticks with them.
  • Q: Did you notice we used the term “finding” a hobby? You need to seek out hobbies you may want to try. It takes effort to find a hobby. Hobbies don’t just fall in your lap. But…
  • Part of the fun in hobbies is the finding part, trying something new. Having a hobby is worth the search.
  • God wants what is best for you and me. He knows that if all we do is work and no play, we will be sick.
  • Maybe not medically sick, but we will be not fun to be around, we will be sick at heart. Grumpy.
  • As we read the memory verse together, notice how it tells us God so loves us. Oh, how He loves us! And, hobbies are just another way He shows us how much He truly does love us.

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X. Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.
Note: we are moving to verse #2.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Topical Questions

  1. What was a time that you did something enjoyable that you feel also pleased God?

  2. How does taking up a hobby honor how God created you?
God didn’t just say we should have fun, He actually made us for fun. Think about that: we are made for fun!

  3. What are some examples of good hobbies and bad hobbies?

Closing Prayer

Dear Father God, this life is filled with so many fun things to do, like hobbies. You are the perfect Father. Thank you for loving us so much that You provided such a wonderful world. You know what is best for us. You know us better than we know ourselves. Help these boys to find hobbies they can enjoy for life. Help them to see Your goodness and love. In Your Son Jesus Christ’s name, we pray. Amen!
