Core 4: Personal Safety

Devotional – Carefulness

Opening

  • We learned today every home has dangers in it if we are not careful, let’s see what God says about it.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 3:21-23 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go in safety…

Devotional

Big picture God’s wisdom keeps us safe. It’s our responsibility to keep our property safe for others.

  • Q: How does God’s wisdom keep us safe? (There’s safety only if we obey God’s wisdom & teaching)
  • In past studies, we’ve learned your parents are God’s way of teaching you wisdom.
  • The Bible is also God’s wisdom. You should read the Bible every day.
  • Read Proverbs 3:1-2. This is God’s wisdom, that you should obey your parents.
  • The teaching verse and Proverbs 3:1-2 reminds us being wise comes with a promise.
  • That promise is that you will be safe, live long, and life will go well if you do what God commands.
  • Q: As you’ve gotten older, has your parents given you more or less responsibilities/chores? Why? You’ve been trusted with more because you have proven yourself more trustworthy and are wiser.
  • One of the most important things you can do to help your parents is help them keep your property safe.
  • Today you’ve been taught how to spot dangers inside & outside your home. Use those skills often.
  • And, it’s not only helpful, it’s your responsibility to keep your property safe for family and for others.
  • Every member of your family has some responsibility for safety, you boys are old enough now to be very helpful and safe. Obeying God’s wisdom requires you to share in responsibilities around the home.
  • The personal safety lessons you learned today will last you all your life. But you need to practice using what you have learned so you don’t forget and that they become good habits you take into adulthood.
  • Personal safety is all about learning what dangers to look for and the discipline of putting that learning into practice. And, these lessons will be helpful when you have your own home someday and your kids to protect.
  • Personal safety goes beyond just your person/yourself. God and your parents look after you. So, you can and should give back just a little by helping around the house, and it will mean so much.
  • Now here’s our memory verse. See “Loving your neighbor” means keeping your property safe for others.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Topical Questions

  1. What does the teaching verse mean by “not letting out of your sight sound judgement and discernment?”

  2. What does the teaching verse mean by “sound judgement and discernment will be life for you?”

  3. What does it mean by “sound judgement and discernment are an ornament around your neck?”

  4. The teaching verse says, “your foot will not stumble.” This means more than tripping & falling, right?

Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for teaching us about personal safety and that personal safety means more than just our own protection. It means protecting others and being wise in all we do. Lord, help these boys to obey their parents, and to be good neighbors by helping their parents to keep their home safe for others. In your name, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!
