Devotional #12 – God’s Help

Opening

  • We learned today how to get medical help quickly, now let’s see what the Bible says about getting help.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Psalms 107:19-20 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.

Devotional

Big picture We have a good God who offers healing to those who call on His name whether its emotional, spiritual or physical healing we need.

  • Introductory Questions:
    • Q: How do you know God will answer you if you call on His name? Bible says so & past experience
    • Q: What does the teaching verse mean when it says “they (Jews) cried to the Lord in their trouble?”
    • Q: Do we have to cry tears for God to hear us? No, Jews were in extreme anguish/emotional distress
    • Q: Did God answer the Jews’ cries for help? What did He send to help? His mighty word
    • Q: What is God’s word? His ministering spirit which heals our heart, mind, soul and body
  • God didn’t send an army to help the Jews, He simply sent His word. That power was more than enough.
  • Trouble comes to us in different ways, sometimes its emotional (worry), sometimes spiritual (demonic attack), and sometimes physical (hurt/pain). God can heal all these troubles and suffering.
  • We have a good God who offers healing, but we are not puppets, we must call on Him to get help.
  • God answers prayers, but he doesn't always give us the answer we want. Sometimes it takes time to see how He answered.
  • Q: If God is so good, why does He allow good Christians to suffer?
    • Suffering builds our faith and trust in Him.
    • Troubles get our focus off ourselves and on to God.
    • We have an enemy, Satan who brings trouble. He prowls like a Lion, wanting to devour us.
    • Troubles shows us we need God to help us.
    • Troubles give God a chance to glorify His name by delivering us from trouble.
    • There are much worse things than earthly troubles: Damnation to Hell forever.
  • God is so good! His love endures forever. Any time we need Him, He will deliver us, if we call. Q: So, why don’t we call on God, more, to help us? We forget, our pride/self-sufficiency, don’t think He will help, our lack of understanding, enemy whispers lies to us against God
  • James 1:6 says you must also believe and not doubt, or you should not expect to get anything from God. So, you should believe God will help, or He may not help. Your reason for asking for help is important.
  • God's help may be different than you expect or hope for. His good purposes and eternal plan will be accomplished.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Topical Questions

  1. What does the Bible mean when it says, “God is life”?
He brings true life and life to the fullest.

  2. We are alive now, but God is life. So, what’s that about?
The quality and direction of our life God made us for a purpose, not to serve ourselves, but to serve others, that is true life. And, life everlasting in heaven comes from knowing God and glorifying Him in our lives.

  3. Have any of you had a prayer answered differently than you expected?

  4. Is God's healing just your phyiscal wounds or illness?

Closing Prayer

Dear God, we are so thankful that You are the God who hears us. You, Lord, are “First Aid”. You heal our wounds, when we are hurting physically, emotionally and spiritually. You are life and life to the fullest. We give you praise and worship for who You are. Our Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
