Elective 9: Animal Care

Devotional – Responsibility

Opening

  • Everyone loves having a pet, but let’s see what God says about being responsible for our pets.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 12:10 A righteous person has regard for the life of his animal, but even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.

Devotional

Big picture Take care of your pet. It’s one of your God-given responsibilities.

  • Q: Does God make all animals, or does He just make us people?
  • Q: Why do you think God create animals?
  • We don’t know why God chose to create animals, but the book of Genesis tells us He does create all the animals, the whole world, and all the universe. And, I for one am sure glad He does create animals!
  • Just think how dull life would be without pets, without birds, without fish in the sea, and without wild animals. When you think about all the good things animals do for us, you begin to see why God may have created them. To make His creation a better place for Him and for us.
  • Genesis also tells us we are to rule over all living creatures. We are responsible to take care of all animals, like a president is responsible for his nation. One of our responsibilities as men and women made in God’s image is to take care of animals, and that means taking care of our pets, too.
  • Genesis tells us we are responsible to take care of all God’s creation including the heavens and the earth and everything in it. Pets certainly are one of those creations we are responsible for.
  • Have you ever thought about pets that way? That God made them for us to take care of? Taking care of your pet teaches us responsibility. It shows respect for God when we do what is right for our pets since God created them.
  • God created animals before He created people, but that doesn’t mean they are more important to God than us. Some people think animals are more important than people, but they don’t know what God tells us in the Bible, which is that people are made in His image and are far more important than animals. That’s why we are chosen to rule over them.
  • Yes, some animals are dangerous, but they don’t rule over us. If we chose to, we could wipe out any animal in the world, and sadly we have done just that to many animals. It’s called extinction. Man has wiped out forever many animals. That is not taking care of them, is it? That is just the opposite.
  • So, taking care of your pet is a God-given responsibility to us. We sure hope this devotion opened your eyes to why you should take care of your pet and that you will help your parents with your pets.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Topical Questions

  1. Sadly, many boys and girls do not take care of their pets at all. Why do you think they don’t care?

  2. What is one thing you can do to be a better caregiver to your pets?

  3. Does God care about animals? Yes, He does! He cares about all His beautiful creation. You should too.

Closing Prayer

Father God, we are so grateful to You for our pets and all the animals that You created. Our time here on earth is made so much richer and better because of our pets and all the animals. Help us to be wise and to be responsible to care of our pets. Remind us of our daily duty to You God to watch over and rule the earth. We want to show You how much we love You by caring for Your creation! We ask these prayers in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen!
