Advancement Leadership Requirements

Guide

The Ready Trailman Rank, Journey Trailman Rank, Ascent Trailman Rank, and Horizon Trailman Rank have a leadership component. The following provisions explain how we apply these requirements given leadership opportunities available within the troop.

Leadership Position Alternative

Modifications:

  1. Any term-based leadership position applies, including troop-created positions such as Patrol Quartermaster.
  2. Service in a position need not have occured after obtaining the prior rank; however, Navigator-specific positions cannot be applied to Adventurer-only ranks (Journey, Ascent, and Horizon).
  3. May have requirement signed off 2-weeks prior to court of honor within the term of six-month office. Trailman does not have to wait to conclusion of half-year term.

Leadership Experience Alternative

Trailman may mix-and-match the leadership experiences of instructing Woodlands and instructing Navigators.

The option to “Plan and implement a unique Troop or patrol service project” is available to Ready Trailman candidates, with prior approval from Trailmaster or Advisor.

Other activities may be counted for one of the five leadership experiences, including:

  1. Serving as substitute patrol leader or officer during a campout or significant event
  2. Successfully serving as a substitute quartermaster during a campout
  3. Serving as patrol grubmaster on a patrol-based campout
  4. Preparing and delivering a devotional of at least 5 minutes (Navigator) or 10 minutes (Adventurer) during an organized patrol or troop event.

Activities not listed that demonstrate servant leadership within the troop setting for Navigators may also be approved at the discretion of the Trailmaster.

FAQs

How should a Trailman plan for leadership experiences?

We recommend that upon obtaining Able Trailman Rank, the Trailman discuss with the Trailmaster, Advisor, or Trail Guide the opportunities available to complete leadership requirements. It can be difficult to complete leadership requirements for rank advancement in a short time window.
