Core 2: Our Faith

Devotional – Faith

Opening

  • Today we learned what our faith is all about and what moral values are. Here is a Bible story about 2 people you probably know well: one with great faith in God and the other person not so much.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

1 Samuel 17:45-47:

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

Devotional

Big picture Faith is believing in something you cannot see!

  • Q: Have any of you ever used a sling like David used to kill Goliath?
  • Q: How big was Goliath? (Over 9’ tall, basketball goal is 10’). His armor weighed 125lbs!
  • David was a boy (not much older than you) who had a strong faith in God. So strong was his faith he risked his life KNOWING God would save him from a Giant (“God will hand you over to me”)
  • Even though you are small you can do wonderful things through your faith.
  • Q: What are some wonderous things you can do through your faith?
    • Love others
    • Help others
    • Be a good example to others
    • Be kind to others
    • Pray for others (Power of prayer is amazing!)
    • Teach others about God, how to know God
  • We do not see God but we know that He is. God is real. Right?
  • Q: Are there other things we cannot see but have faith they exist? -- Your bones/heart/lungs, gravity, wind, smells, viruses/bacteria, planets, magnetic fields, love.
  • Q: Why was David so brave (to face Goliath alone)? But was David really alone? Who was with him?
  • The God of David is the same God who is with you today! Who wants to know you and make you a brave warrior for Him!
  • David had a job to do for God. And you have a job to do that God planned just for you, for your life.
  • But it will take faith to do the job God has for you. God believes in you, He made you perfectly and wonderfully just as you are to do that job, whatever it may be. But you need to believe in Him!

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.
Note: we are moving to verse #3.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Topical Questions

  1. David beat Goliath, but who really beat Goliath?
God used David, just like David used the sling.

  2. Was this the first battle David had ever won?
No! God helped him kill lions and bears as a shepherd. So, David’s faith was tested, many times! He and God were buddies. He knew God was there even though he couldn’t see Him. David believed God would save him.

  3. So, what are some ways, like David, to become closer to God?
Read about him, pray, listen, discuss

Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, you are an amazing and wonderful God! The God who is real. The God who saves us! Help us, Lord to have great faith just like David. Give us courage to do mighty and wonderous things for You, God! For You are all powerful, all knowing, everywhere, and yet You love us. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen!
