Devotional – Faith
Opening
- Today we learned what our faith is all about and what moral values are.
- Here is a Bible story about 2 people you probably know well: one with great faith in God and the other person not so much.
- Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down
1 Samuel 17:45-47:
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
Devotional
Big picture God has a job for you, just like David had a job, but it will take faith to do your job!
- Q: David had older brothers, right? Why didn’t any of them fight Goliath? Why David?
- God had a special plan for David. And God has a special plan for you, too!
- David was a boy (not much older than you) who had a strong faith in God. So strong was his faith he risked his life KNOWING God would save him from a Giant (“God will hand you over to me”)
- Even though you are young you can do wonderful things through your faith.
- Q: What are some wonderous things you can do through your faith?
- Love others
- Help others
- Be a good example to others
- Be kind to others
- Pray for others (Power of prayer is amazing!)
- Teach others about God, how to know God
- David had an amazing job to do for God, to slay Goliath.
- And you have a job to do that God planned just for you, for your life.
- But it will take faith to do the job God has for you.
- God believes in you, He made you perfectly and wonderfully, just as you are, to do that job, whatever it may be. But you need to believe in Him!
- Q: What kinds of jobs do you do around your home?
- Q: Do you take your jobs seriously? David took his job seriously.
- But sometimes things don’t go our way—people get sick, people lose their job, lose their loved ones.
- But, even then, maybe even more than when things go well, we need to persevere in faith.
- Everything didn’t go well for David. He made mistakes. But he kept on believing (Look at Psalms!)
- Now let’s read the memory verse.

Closing Prayer
Dear Lord, you are an amazing and wonderful God! The God who is real. The God who saves us! You are full of grace and mercy. Help us, Lord to have great faith just like David. Give us courage to do mighty and wonderous jobs for You, God! For You are all powerful, all knowing, everywhere, and yet You love us. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen
