Opening
- Today, we learned about being trustworthy, now let's see what the Bible says about that characteristic.
- Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down
Exodus 20:16 You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Devotional
Big picture Tell the Truth
- Q: Does anyone know which one of the 10 Commandments was the teaching verse? (the 9th)
- Q: What’s another word to describe false testimony? (lying)
- Q: Can anyone tell us what this commandment means in your own words? (Tell the truth, don't lie)
- Q: Does this mean not lying to your neighbor across the street or not lying to everyone?
- Each one of the 10 Commandments is very important! God thinks they are so important He wrote them on a tablet made of stone to give to the Israelites and to us as we read the Old Testament.
- Our teaching verse is God’s 9th commandment and so it is very important!
- What it means is God commands us to always tell the truth, and not to lie. Always!
- Telling the truth is not just the right thing to do, God commands that we do tell the truth.
- Telling the truth is so important, our whole justice system is based on truth.
- Without truthful people our whole country and the world as we know it would fall apart.
- A truthful nation starts with you telling the truth. That is your part of being a good Godly citizen.
- Q: Can you lie to God? No, you can’t hide from God. He knows everything.
- If you lie, God knows. So, you are not getting away with anything. Eventually, all liars get punished.
- Lying is a sin. Liars who lie all the time are going to Hell. That’s not good.
- But we all lie sometimes. That doesn’t make it right. But you can stop lying if you want to.
- Praying for God to forgive you and repenting of lying will help you stop lying.
- Q: Do you know the best way to stop lying, though? Simply always tell the truth.
- The Bible is full of liars and full of truthful people. Which one do you want to be known as, a liar or someone who tells the truth? The choice is up to you! You think about that.
Memory Verse #3
Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Topical Questions
- Why is always telling the truth so hard to do?
- Do you think if people knew it was one of the 10 commandments from God they would stop lying?
- Do you think people would tell the truth if they realized God knows when they lie?
- Jesus said we need to tell the truth but to do it with love. Can you hurt people with the truth sometimes?
Closing Prayer
Dear Father God, we thank You for giving us the 9th commandment so that our whole world would value truth and know that You are the truth. And, we thank You that Jesus said He was the truth and the life, for no one comes to You Father God except through Jesus. Help these boys to always tell the truth in love, like Jesus did. For the truth will set us free, whereas lying is not freedom; it’s like being in prison. Help us all to choose to tell the truth. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen!
